Benefits of using LEDs for Vehicle Lighting
LEDs will turn on at full brightness at all times and will not flicker in winter (as do fluorescent lights that require a warm-up period).
LED fixtures are not made the same. If LEDs are placed in plastic fixture, heat generated by LEDs will be trapped in the fixtures and eventually burn the LED or shorten the lifetime of the LEDs. If the LEDs are covered by plastic lens, the lens will turn yellow, or crack over the time, and the plastic cover traps heat too.
SST ST40 LED fixtures are made with 99% of Aluminum and are using glass lens. They are extremely rugged and not damaged by vibration. They are ideal for vehicle lighting. The individual LED up-gradable and replaceable.
SST’s Vehicle Lighting products
SST makes 12 volt vehicle lights that are ideal for lighting the interior of sales trucks, mobile stores, RV’s, boats, and more! Our standard vehicle lighting products include:
- 21Watt, 24″ SunStrip40 (ST40) for Ceiling Lighting
- 28Watt, 24″ SunStrip30 direct/indirect(ST30UD) for Ceiling Lighting
- 6.5Watt, 20″ SunStrip10 (ST10) for Shelf Lighting
- 15Watt, 12″ SunStrip40 (ST40) for Shelf Lighting
Lighting in Sales Trucks and Mobile Stores
For a typical 20-foot long mobile store truck, (6) 24″ 21-watt ST40 Ceiling Lights and (22) 20″ 6.5-watt ST10 Shelf Lights are typically recommended. SST 24″ ST40 fixtures are to be located along the main length of the truck and be angled towards the shelving. SST 20″ ST10 fixtures are to be located to the front of the the shelves and the drawers. For long wooden shelves, it is recommended to install one 20″ light per 3 feet of shelf. For metal shelves, it is recommended to install one light per shelf. For multiple drawers (where the 12V wiring may be hard to reach) it is recommended to wire the first light to the existing 12VDC on the truck and “daisy chain” up to 6 additional lights.
A typical 20-foot long trailer needs only (2) 6.5Watt 4-inch strips on the ceiling to provide the same brightness as in a typical residential living room. Only (3) 21Watt 2-foot strips are required to provide the same brightness as in a typical commercial office. The 2-foot strips provide the same light coverage as a 4-foot fluorescent tube.
Ceiling Lighting
Option #1: 24″ length, 21-Watt, ST40 Ceiling light
The photo above shows the recommended layout of the SST ST40 24″ fixtures, along the main length of the truck. This helps to reduce glare while providing optimal lighting to the shelves. We can provide extra wiring free of charge with the 24″ ST40 to place the lights into ideal locations.
SST’s 21-Watt, 24″ length Ceiling light fixtures is made of a solid, thin-profile (1/2″ thickness) aluminum strip. Features of the fixture include:
- Made with three of SST’s patented AS-LED modules. The AS-LED modules provide optimal heat dissipation away from the LED chips and ensure a very long 60,000+ hour operating lifetime. They are also made with glass lenses (plastic lenses tend to degrade, hurt light output, and eventually need to be replaced). Best of all, they are easily replaceable!
- Runs on 12 Volt DC current and is wired directly to the 12 Volt wires on the truck
- Output of 3,400 lumens (brighter than a 30-Watt 4-foot fluorescent light)
- Comes with 2 swivel brackets for easy mounting. The swivel brackets allow the fixture to be “angled” to direct the light output as desired (see photo below). This provides good lighting to the shelves while eliminating glare to persons standing in the center aisle.
- Optional diffusers can be provided free of charge to reduce glare effects (see photo below).
- SST’s 24″ ST40 ceiling fixture is considered one of the most reliable truck lights on the market and comes with a 10-year warranty.

Option #2: 24″, 28Watt, ST30 Direct/Indirect Ceiling light
As shown in the photo above, SST’s 24″ ST30 Direct/Indirect light is a strip light that shines both direct and indirect light. The ST30 Direct/Indirect can mounted on the side wall, or using metal pivot to mount to the ceiling, while keep ~6 inch gap to the ceiling. The ST30 fixture can be angled so the indirect (up light) provides lights to the ceiling. Features of the ST30 Direct/Indirect light include:
- Runs on 12V DC current and may be wired directly to the 12V wires on the truck
- 4,600 lumens (2 AS-LED models as Indirect) or 5,700 lumens (3 AS-LED models as Indirect)
- Smooth light without glare
SST’s 24″ ST30 Direct/Indirect light comes with a 5-year warranty. The AS-LED models on the top are individually replaceable.
Shelf Lighting
Shelf Lighting Option #1: 20″ 6.5-Watt ST10 Shelf Light
SST’s 20″ ST10 Shelf Light fixture is made of a solid, thin-profile aluminum strip housing. It is ideal for shelf and drawer. They can be easily mounted to the front of the shelf and drawers with swivel endcaps or magnets. Features of the ST10 Shelf light include:
- Considered one of the most reliable truck lights on the market, the ST10 shelf light comes with a 10-year warranty!
- 1,000 lumen output
- Comes with a swivel bracket to direct (angle) the light as desired.
- Runs on 12V DC current and may be wired directly to the 12V wires on the truck
- Connect the first light directly to the truck’s existing 12VDC wires. Thereafter, Up to 6 additional lights can be “daisy chained” together with provided wiring.
Fixture Layout
For long wooden shelves, it is recommended to install one 20″ light per 3 feet of shelf.
For metal shelves, it is recommended to install one light per shelf and to wire each light directly to the existing 12VDC wires on the truck.
For multiple drawers (where the 12V wiring may be hard to reach) it is recommended to wire the first light to the existing 12VDC on the truck and “daisy chain” up to 6 additional lights.

Shelf Lighting Option #2: 12″ 15-Watt ST40 Shelf Light
The 12″, 15-Watt ST40 shelf light is recommended for those wanting a more “rugged” look. Features of the 15-Watt ST40 shelf light are similar to those of the 21-Watt, 24″ ST40 ceiling light described above. They are 2,260 lumens
SST’s 21-Watt ST40 is usually not recommended for shelf lighting because the power level drawn will generally be too high (installation of too many ST40’s on the same shelf might overload the small capacity circuit breakers).
